Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese art form that involves repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The term "kintsugi" translates to "golden joinery" or "golden repair." Instead of disguising or hiding the cracks and fractures caused by breakage, kintsugi highlights and accentuates them, turning them into part of the object's history and beauty.
The philosophy behind kintsugi is deeply rooted in the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which values imperfection, transience, and the acceptance of the flawed or imperfect nature of existence. Rather than discarding a broken object, kintsugi celebrates its history and the journey it has undergone by making the mended cracks a prominent feature, often creating a piece that is even more beautiful and unique than the original.
